Oporto Sports is delighted to announce that we will be representing Stevenage first-team manager Alex Revell.
Alex took on the role following a brief interim spell at the helm, after Oporto client Steve Evans departed the club to join Rotherham United towards the end of last season.
Revell enjoyed a successful playing career, appearing nearly 700 times across various clubs in the EFL and non-league, with 2014 being a highpoint, as he scored in the League One play-off semi-final for Rotherham United to take them past Preston North End and to a Wembley final against Leyton Orient. In the final, Revell scored two second-half goals to level the scores at 2-2, the second being arguably one of the best strikes in play-off final or Wembley history, with Rotherham going on to win the final on penalties and earn promotion to the second tier. He went on play two seasons at Championship level for three clubs; Rotherham, Cardiff City and MK Dons.
Since his playing retirement, Revell has coached at Stevenage in their academy, and then was appointed as first-team manager in 2020, before the season was ended prematurely due to the COVID pandemic. After leaving the role in 2021, he again coached in the club’s academy, before being named as first-team coach under Steve Evans in April 2022, alongside assistant Paul Raynor, with the management team leading Stevenage to League Two safety, before finishing as runners-up in 2023, as well as knocking Aston Villa out of the FA Cup.
Speaking about the announcement, Oporto director Dean Eldredge said: “I’ve been fortunate enough to get to know Alex a little during brief chats over the past couple of years, and it is clear that he is a sharp individual, with an engaging personality, and a wealth of coaching experience, who is undoubtedly ready for this opportunity as a manager, especially given the great success he has enjoyed supporting both Steve and Paul.
“He is hugely respected and admired by everyone at Stevenage Football Club, and he is someone that we are very proud to be representing, ahead of the new season. I’d like to personally thank Alex for placing his trust in us, and wish him and everyone at the club all the best for this season and the future.”
Revell has the UEFA Pro Licence qualification, as well as a BSc (Hons) Exercise and Sports Science degree, earned whilst still playing, from The Manchester Metropolitan University, with a 2:1 grade.
